KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WJHL) - After the assassination of political activist Charlie Kirk, employees across the country and locally have started seeing consequences from their online opinions regarding Kirk's death.
Many employees, along with two local East Tennessee State University (ETSU) professors, have been placed on administrative leave following complaints about their social media posts.
Principal attorney at Tahinci Law Firm Alexis Tahinci said some that are receiving backlash from their comments and posts can argue that what they typed is an exercise of their First Amendment right, however, she said private employers can always set their own standards of employment.
