PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Community meetings overseen by a court-appointed monitor to improve transparency at the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office are moving to a more secure location, federal officials said.

The sheriff’s office has been under federal oversight since a judge found it had racially profiled Latino drivers more than a decade ago. The monitoring effort has cost taxpayers about $311 million, according to Arizona’s Family Investigates .

U.S. District Judge G. Murray Snow , who has presided over this case from the beginning, said the events of late don’t give him a lot of confidence in having open meetings, but he insisted they were important. Based on what happened at July’s meeting, he said he wanted to take precautions.
