A woman died Wednesday afternoon after possibly drowning while swimming in the St. Lawrence River near Berthier-sur-Mer, in the Chaudière-Appalaches region.

Emergency services were notified around 2 p.m. as several people were swimming in the river when one of them started having difficulty swimming.

The Canadian Coast Guard was then called to help, explained Camille Savoie, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec.

After recovering the victim, resuscitation maneuvers were undertaken before he was transported to a hospital, where he was unfortunately pronounced dead.

“Although this death appears to be a drowning, an investigation is still underway on our side,” the spokesperson said.

Technicians and forensic investigators attended the scene to analyze the scene.
