The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) has axed 130 staff and more than 1000 subjects in massive cost-cutting measures that unions tried to block .

The university, based in the heart of Sydney and boasting 51,000 students, announced the measures last night as it looks to save $100 million.

The university's School of Education will be discontinued alongside the schools of International Studies and Public Health, with the number of faculties downsized from 24 to 15.

The Faculties of Business and Law will also be combined in a new Faculty of Business and Law.

As a result, 134 full-time staff will lose their jobs, and 1100 subjects and 167 courses will be discontinued.

It is a reduction on the previously proposed job losses which were expected to number over 400.
