Residents voiced their outrage for a second night on Wednesday to demand that a Palmetto Bay councilman resign over his controversial comments about the assassination of Charlie Kirk – but the elected official is refusing to step down.
"I do not plan to resign. I will not be resigning," councilman Steve Cody said. "I got elected to serve until 2028, and I intend to serve out my term."
On Monday night, the mayor and village council voted 4-1 to censure Cody, request his resignation and ask for Gov. Ron DeSantis to step in. The council can't fire Cody – he can only be removed by voluntary resignation, a recall vote or by the governor.
"I think we’ve taken every action that we can based on the residents’ wishes," Mayor Karyn Cunningham said.
