CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) - The U.S. Custom House and several other buildings in the country could be changing hands as part of a push to reduce the federal government's property inventory.
The Public Buildings Reform Board (PBRB) says it's an opportunity to save taxpayer money. They are meeting with stakeholders next week to get a better understanding of the buildings considered for disposition.
This would include federal buildings in Jacksonville, FL, Savannah, GA, Columbia, SC, and Charleston, SC. PBRB says many of these buildings sit vacant or are seldom used, and transferring them to local ownership would reduce the federal real estate footprint by about 7.1 million gross square feet, saving billions of dollars that are used to operate and maintain them now.
