Out of the destruction caused by Hurricane Helene last year, a nonprofit was born.
Mountain Aid Project was created to help Burke County and the surrounding communities recover from the hurricane.
Now, the organization plans to open a cafe and community space at 318 Bouchelle St., Morganton, in the former Divinity Donuts location — a church building turned into a restaurant. The new cafe will be called The Tilted Map.
The cafe and community space will serve locally made food, baked goods, coffee and other beverages, according to the organization and its Executive Director Kristin McKinnon Watson.
