United Way Central West Virginia launched the 20th anniversary of its Day of Caring on Wednesday with a kickoff event at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center.

This year, 1,025 volunteers representing 60 teams serving at 64 project sites across the organization’s six-county footprint — Boone, Braxton, Clay, Kanawha, Logan and Putnam counties. Collectively, their work will add up to more than 5,000 volunteer hours in a single day.

Two decades of service

For two decades, Day of Caring has brought together companies, employees and community members to tackle projects that nonprofits often can’t afford or don’t have time to complete. Many employers continue to support the tradition by allowing their workers to take the day off to lend their skills to local causes.
