It comes as the UK prepares to formally recognise Palestine as a state before next week’s United Nations General Assembly, on the understanding that Israel will not suddenly start taking “substantive steps to end” its conflict in Gaza.

The government was following France’s lead when it announced this move in July, but it will become the 148th country around the world to do so.

However, the UK will reportedly wait until after Trump’s state visit to the UK is over to formally recognise the territory, as the US is opposed to granting Palestine statehood.
