An online petition for scrapping the BBC TV licence fee for pensioners has reached one of its milestones, leading the Government to issue a statement in response.

As of writing, the petition has reached 13,400 signatures, crossing the 10,000 needed to receive an official Government reply.

The petition simply states: "We want the Government to fund free TV licences for existing pensioners and those who reach the official retirement age. When people reach retirement age, we think they should receive a state-financed free TV licence."

In response, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) stated that here are a "number of TV licence concessions available, including for over-75s in receipt of Pension Credit".
