While firefighters extinguished a blaze in an abandoned building in downtown Augusta early Thursday, authorities received a tip about who allegedly set the fire and soon after arrested the suspect.

Richmond County sheriff's deputies were managing traffic at 12th and Broad streets due to the fire when they said someone approached them and identified the suspect. The witness claimed the suspect admitted to setting the fire and planned to do it again.

Using the witness description, deputies located the suspect, who then fled on foot, according to a news release. When the suspect refused to stop, they used a stun gun. The suspect then surrendered and was taken into custody.
