(WKBN) -- Ohio is one of six states that will be testing a program using artificial intelligence to weed out inappropriate Medicare services and billing.

According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Wasteful and Inappropriate Service Reduction (WISeR) Model will help to ensure timely and appropriate Medicare payment for select items and services. The model will encourage safe and evidence-based best practices for treating people with Medicare.

WISer will run six performance years from Jan. 1, 2026, to Dec. 31, 2031, in six states: Ohio, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona and Washington.

The WISeR Model tests the use of enhanced technology to decrease certain wasteful (low-value) services shown to have little to no clinical, evidence-based benefit. Technology
