A robbery and vandalism suspect died in custody after resisting his arrest in the Harbor region of Los Angeles, police announced Thursday.

It was early Tuesday morning, according to the L.A. Police Department, when officers received a radio call reporting a robbery in progress at a convenience store in San Pedro.

Around 2:30 a.m., Harbor Patrol Division officers arrived at the store located in the 700 block of West Channel Street to find the suspect vandalizing the business. The LAPD has since identified the suspect as 34-year-old Roger John Nielsen.

Officers purportedly first tried speaking with Nielsen, who LAPD said then armed himself with a piece of plexiglass from a sign he had damaged.

“The officers deployed a 40mm Less-Lethal Launcher, striking Nielson in the upper torso area,”
