Bobby Grier never sought to be the center of attention, but he inevitably found himself at the center of American history time and time again. After the legendary Pitt football player desegregated the Sugar Bowl, served his country abroad in the Air Force and made a life for himself as an adopted member of the community in Pittsburgh, the spotlight found Grier again on Wednesday evening, almost a year after his passing at the age of 91.

One reluctant hero during a particularly turbulent era of the American Civil Rights movement, Grier’s impact on the gridiron, American civil culture and beyond was explored further during “Game Changers: Bobby Grier,” a program held at the Heinz History Center in conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh and Pitt athletics.
