WHEATON, Md. (DC News Now) -- Montgomery County has launched a new online system for applying and renewing annual fire code compliance permits.

The Department of Permitting Services says the change will streamline the process for commercial building owners, who are required by law to maintain permits to ensure fire safety. The new system allows applicants to submit inspection records, upload documents and pay fees online.

Business owners who fail to obtain a permit could face fines starting at $500.
