LONG ISLAND, N.Y. (PIX11) – Look out, Long Island, there’s a new beetle in town.
In Suffolk County, researchers recently discovered an invasive plant disease called laurel wilt, which destroys trees and shrubs, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation. It’s the first time the disease has been found in New York.
“The detection of laurel wilt on Long Island marks a troubling new chapter in the spread of this invasive plant disease,” DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton said.
The disease, which was found in Suffolk County, originates from the invasive redbay ambrosia beetle. It’s a tiny amber-colored beetle with a long and narrow body. On a penny, it looks about as big as Abraham Lincoln’s nose.
