Whether it was a bat, a ball or a racquet, Steven Callanan was handy at just about any sport he had a go at.

But it was football that held his heart.

"He was fantastic on the field — he brought people around him," Steven's father Paul Callanan said.

In March 2023, Steven Callanan had just turned 21.

He had a long-term girlfriend, had completed a plumbing apprenticeship and signed on to buy a property.

On Saturday March 25, Steven was named best on ground in a practice match in Torquay for his new club, Wallan, and spent that night celebrating with his teammates.

The next day, he took his own life.

The coroner's report into Steven's suicide confirmed he had cocaine in his system "consumed at some point during his football trip the night prior to his death".
