On Jan. 12, an attorney for Leilani Simon, the mother convicted of killing her 20-month-old son, Quinton Simon, in October 2022 and disposing of his body in a dumpster, filed an amended motion for a new trial in Chatham County Superior Court.
Judge Tammy Stokes sentenced Simon, who was found guilty on 19 separate charges in the death of her infant son, to life in prison with the possibility of parole with 10 years to serve. Those charges involved malice murder, felony murder and concealing the death of another.
The original motion for a new trial, submitted on Nov. 24, 2024 , contended that a new trial was necessary on the grounds that
"The verdict is contrary to the evidence and without evidence to support it;
The evidence is decidedly and strongly against the weight of the evidence
