The Student Wrestling Development Program (SWDP) football team continues to defy expectations in its first season on the gridiron. At the halfway point of the season, the Archangels are 4–0 and in position to secure the top seed in the upcoming state playoffs.
Those wins mean more than just an undefeated record. Beating Nikiski in the season opener and defeating Seward in week 3. Both were in the state championship last year. Head Coach Heath Martin praised the team’s resiliency, especially in those wins against last year’s state qualifiers.
“Seward was a great test, they’re a good football team,” Martin said. “I feel like our kids showed a lot of heart being down 8-0 at halftime. Never gave up, didn’t point fingers, regrouped, came out with the same physical mindset and got the dub.”
