WEST VIRGINIA (WBOY) — If you were awake at the wee hours of the morning on Thursday, you may have spotted a bright object streaking across the West Virginia sky, but what was it?
A 12 News viewer submitted the photo seen below after spotting the object above Spruce Knob, and while it may appear to be a comet, it was most likely a rocket.
The object seen was most likely a rocket launched by SpaceX for another one of its Starlink satellites, according to Space.com. The satellites launched with a Falcon 9 rocket, which lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 5:30 a.m.
The rocket carried 28 satellites to add to Starlink's fleet of nearly 8,400 orbiting the Earth. Thursday's launch was also the 117th Falcon 9 flight of the year, Space.com said.
