WASHINGTON D.C., DC — U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga (R-MI) announced Thursday that he's introducing legislation to propose that in the event of a government shutdown, Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agents (ICE), Border Patrol and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Enforcement Officers would still be paid.
Traditionally, during a government shutdown, federal employees deemed "nonessential" would be furloughed, while those deemed essential, such as military personnel, must continue working without immediate paychecks. However, in the event of a shutdown, some areas of government may have already received funding and remain functioning, or contingencies are made to keep things open.
The legislation, the " Pay our Homeland Defenders Act of 2026 ," comes as a possible government shutdown
