The University of Michigan plans to launch a new center devoted to civil discourse by spring 2026, backed by a $50 million investment, President Domenico Grasso announced Thursday, Sept. 18, at the first board meeting of the academic year.

Former President Santa Ono had announced in December 2024 that the university was pursuing a project called the "Institute for Civil Discourse," but the initiative stalled after his departure. University officials said the new institute will carry a different name, though it has not yet been chosen.

It is not yet clear whether the $50 million will come from donors or university funds.
