ST. LOUIS – President Donald Trump has repeatedly mentioned the possibility of deploying the National Guard to fight crime in St. Louis.

In an interview with FOX 2 News on Thursday, Missouri Senator Josh Hawley said Governor Mike Kehoe has been in touch with the White House, and that the governor has the authority to ask the president to send help.

“People deserve to be safe,” Hawley said. “This idea that you can't send your kids to the bus stop without them getting shot at, and you can't go downtown to a baseball game without fearing for your life—this is ridiculous.”

The senator said he welcomes federal help. When he was the Missouri Attorney General, Hawley said he worked closely with federal authorities on cases in St. Louis and across Missouri on fighting crimes like human traffick
