NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Big changes are coming to one of New Haven’s busiest corridors.
City and state leaders have announced a $13.2 million project to makeover Whitney Avenue, a 1.5-mile stretch that residents and officials say is in desperate need of more safety guards.
“It is often a very dangerous corridor. I mean, you can feel the traffic right now,” said New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker.
As if on cue, a car sped past every minute during the press conference.

“There’s a car going by right now at about 50 miles an hour,” said state Rep. Roland Lemar.
Whitney Avenue residents, many of whom have pushed for changes for more than a decade, say the speeding problem has long been out of control.
