At 3 p.m. across the country, bells rang to commemorate the 238th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution.

The Columbia chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution hosted its bell-ringing ceremony at the Boone County Courthouse. Ceremonies were also held by other chapters across the country in an event known as “Bells Across America.”

“(The Constitution) was read in public in Philadelphia 11 years after the Declaration of Independence was read in Philadelphia, and both times people were called together by bells,” said Julia Goodell, Columbia chapter chair for the Daughters of the American Revolution. “So we, in the Daughters of the American Revolution, decided to honor our Constitution by reenacting the bells.”
