The Department of Homeland Security has classified the upcoming funeral and memorial service for conservative activist Charlie Kirk as a Special Event Assessment Rating (SEAR) Level 1 event. This designation indicates that the event will receive the same level of security as major events like the Super Bowl and the Boston Marathon.

According to a DHS official, SEAR Level 1 events are reserved for occasions of significant national importance. This classification allows the federal government to deploy a full range of law enforcement and security resources to assist local officials in ensuring a safe and successful event.

The funeral is scheduled to take place at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, on Sunday. President Donald Trump and other cabinet members are expected to attend. William Mack, the Secret Service special agent in charge of the Phoenix field office, stated that the Secret Service will serve as the federal coordinator for the event. "Our teams are already on the ground in Phoenix and Glendale, working side-by-side with state, local, and federal partners," Mack said. "Together, we are fully committed to ensuring that these solemn events receive the comprehensive protection and support they require."

Local law enforcement, including officers from the Glendale Police Department, are preparing for a large turnout. Public Information Officer Jose Santiago noted that they anticipate over 100,000 attendees. "We will not be surprised if more than 100,000 people show up," he said. Santiago added that people are expected to arrive from across the country, with some lining up as early as 2 a.m. on Sunday. The parking lot will open at 7 a.m., but camping in the area will not be permitted.

Santiago emphasized the extensive security measures in place, stating, "Officers will be anywhere the eye can see, and in places it can’t," referring to the use of aircraft, drones, and helicopters. The Department of Public Safety and the Secret Service will manage security inside State Farm Stadium.

Derek Mayer, a former assistant special agent in charge of the Secret Service’s Chicago field office, explained that the SEAR designation allows for a coordinated response from various agencies. "This designation allows for a ‘whole of government’ approach, which means many different local, state, and federal agencies will supply resources and manpower to guarantee extra security measures are in place," Mayer said. He noted that the high-profile nature of the event, with President Trump and other notable figures in attendance, warranted the heightened security measures.

The funeral is open to the public, but attendees are encouraged to register with Turning Point USA.
