Australian teen phenom Gout Gout has missed out on a spot in the men's 200-metre final at his maiden senior global championships.

The 17-year-old finished fourth in his semi final at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo with a time of 20.36 seconds.

In wet conditions at Japan National Stadium, Gout finished behind winner Bryan Levell, reigning Olympic gold medallist Letsile Tebogo and American Courtney Lindsey.

"What a run," Genevieve Gregson said on Nine post-race.

"It's a hard to act to have Levell and Tebogo up front and see how fast they are, but we are so proud of him, and what he's done has made history."
