HELENA, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Electric scooters are all the rage for kids and even some adults, but law enforcement reminds drivers that many electric scooters are not considered toys under Alabama law.
“We’ve had instances where several youth will be on the motorized scooters,” said Jeff Murphy with the Helena Police Department. “[They’re] running stop signs, driving or riding erratically, passing stopped school buses.”
These are all dangers that come with consequences behind the wheel.
Murphy said certain electric scooters under 100 pounds that go more than 20 mph fall under a motorized vehicle law in Alabama.
“Which requires them to be licensed, have insurance, and registered with the state,” Murphy said.
