With much of the facility having reached the end of its functional life, the City of Stirling has given the green light to a $16 million plan to modernise the Balcatta Recycling Centre.

Council recently accepted a tender for the design and construction of a major refurbishment to the facility.

The centre, which opened in 1979, offers services for the disposal of recyclables, green waste, car tyres, household hazardous waste, and general waste.

It also houses the Balcatta Recycling Shop, managed by disability services provider Workpower in partnership with the city.

According to the city, the facility has been under considerable strain, with safety and efficiency increasingly compromised.
