SALEM Ore. (KPTV) - The Salem-Keizer School District announced on Thursday that all of its middle schools will begin adding weapon detection systems this year, but it will be a year-long process.

Last year, the district began updating security for the high school by reducing the number of school entries and exits and installing weapon detection systems at entrances.

Administrators said that for this to be successful and protect students in middle schools, they can only launch a couple of schools at a time.

“Probably the most disturbing trend … is that we’ve seen a decline in age, in charges where it’s possession of a weapon, which is a driving factor for us. We don’t want weapons in our schools,” said Chris Baldridge, director of safety and risk management. “We feel our layered systems
