The area’s major health systems are all eyeing Chesterfield for new or expanded hospitals and are now underway on seeking state regulatory approval needed for their projects to proceed.

Representatives of HCA, VCU Health and Bon Secours pitched their respective proposals at a Virginia Department of Health hearing Thursday as being necessary to handle existing and future demand from patients in fast-growing Chesterfield County.

The hearing came as an early step in the projects’ Certificate of Public Need, or COPN, process, and followed the health systems’ filing of COPN applications for the hospital proposals this summer. Virginia regulates hospitals and other medical facilities through the program, and projects subject to the process require approval
