MANHATTAN, New York -- At least 11 elected officials have been arrested at a sit-in protesting against ICE outside Federal Plaza Immigration Court in Manhattan on Thursday, according to police.
Demonstrators say immigrant New Yorkers have been illegally detained in the building, usually after routine hearings.
They say the practice must stop.
Comptroller Brad Lander, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, State Senator Julia Salazar and Assemblywoman Jessica Gonzalez-Rojas were among the elected officials who were arrested.
They will be given police summonses and then be released.
