The Ohio Supreme Court weighed in on a fight between the city of Nelsonville and the Athens County Board of Elections over who should be on the upcoming November ballot.

Nearly a year ago, voters in Nelsonville approved Issue 23 to switch to a new form of city government – a decision that apparently didn't sit well with the Nelsonville City Council .

The new system, approved by voters, faced some logistical problems such as potential disruption of first responder services. The city tried to address those issues in May 2025 but voters rejected the proposal.

The Board of Elections, though, didn't recognize the city's notice and certified candidates to be on the fall ballot for the new form of Nelsonville city government.
