WASHINGTON – A week after the conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s assassination, a chill has settled over Capitol Hill.

Members of Congress and their staff are shaken. Some have postponed events because of safety considerations. House leaders have requested extra money to pay for security when the representatives are back in their districts.

There is an awareness that what happened to Charlie Kirk “can happen to anyone,” said Rep. Yassamin Ansari, an Arizona Democrat who represents much of Phoenix in Congress.
