Kristin Chenoweth is speaking out after her reaction to the killing of Charlie Kirk sparked mixed reactions, including some outrage among the Broadway star's fanbase.

The actress and singer, best known for embodying good witch Glinda in the original stage production of "Wicked," appeared on NY1 Sept. 18 and discussed the online fervor whipped up by an Instagram comment she shared in the wake of Kirk's death.

"I saw what happened online with my own eyes. And I had a human moment of reflection," Chenoweth, 57, told journalist Frank DiLella. "Right then, I came to understand that my comment hurt some folks and that hurt me."

"It's no secret that I have been – that I'm a Christian, that I'm a person of faith. It's also no secret that I am an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, and for some, that doesn't go together," she continued, after choking up slightly. "But for me, it always has. And it always will."

Kirk, both a vocal proponent of Christian faith and opponent of LGBTQ rights, was shot earlier this month while speaking at a university in Utah. His death has further exacerbated the divides of an already polarized nation.

In the aftermath of his killing, Chenoweth wrote a comment on Kirk's last Instagram post: "I'm. So. Upset. Didn't always agree but appreciated some perspectives. What a heartbreak. His young family. I know where he is now. Heaven. But still."

Her post drew some disappointment from fans, particularly the large swath that identifies as LGBTQ+, for whom Kirk was well-known as a symbol of prejudice against their communities.

"Nice job spitting in the faces of the gay fans you used to boost your career," one commenter wrote on a recent post of hers, while another asked: "What was it about Charlie that make (sic) you think he's in heaven?"
