Up until this year, the most H-Richard Riegert of Simcoe won in a lottery was $1,000.

That changed on July 2 when he won $50,000 in the Ontario 49 draw.

A retiree, Reigert has been a loyal lottery player for decades. The father of two said he has been playing the same numbers for years but had never won a major prize — until recently.

“The most I’d ever won before this was $1,000,” he said.

“I was out grocery shopping and decided to check my ticket,” he recalled. “When the screen read ‘$50,000,’ I was in shock and disbelief.”

Riegert quickly sent a text to his son to share the news. His daughter was working at the time, so he decided to call her later that day.

“They were both so happy for me,” he said. “My son thought it was just great.”
