Stuck in a house fire, a dog helped his rescuer find his leash so they could both leave the burning home

Oakley, the family dog, was the only one home when the blaze broke out

A dog is safe and sound after helping in his own rescue from a house fire.

Police in Aurora, Ill., responded to a report of a house fire around 1 p.m. on Sept. 11, and when they saw flames rising from the back of the home, they broke down the door and entered, according to body camera footage from the incident. Inside, police investigator Michael Ely found the interior hazy with smoke, and no one was present in the home except for the family dog
