NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) -- A person trying to enter New Iberia Senior High School with a gun this afternoon was stopped by police, authorities said.

According to a message sent to parents by the Iberia Parish School District, an unidentified individual tried to enter the school with a gun on his person.

"Thanks to our safety protocols and the use of our weapons detectors, staff were able to prohibit access before he was able to enter the facility," the message read.

The school resource officer and New Iberia Police were able to remove the person from campus. Officials said the person did not set foot in the building.
