DES MOINES, Iowa —

An Iowa lawmaker is stepping aside in order to take a new position offered to him by President Donald Trump.

State Rep. Mike Sexton (R-Rockwell City) submitted his letter of resignation Friday.

In a news release, Sexton says it was an honor to serve Iowa.

"I am deeply grateful for the trust and support of my constituents over these years, and for the opportunity to work alongside dedicated colleagues to advance meaningful legislation," Sexton said. "I carry with me immense gratitude for the experiences, relationships, and progress we've achieved together."

The release did not specify what position Sexton is accepting.

As required by Iowa law, a special election to find Sexton's replacement will be announced at a later date.
