WACO, Texas (KWTX) - A plane crash in North Carolina last night killed three people Thursday.

One of the victims was Grammy-winning country songwriter and Baylor alumni Brett Cornelius or better known as Brett James.

FlightAware data shows a Cirrus SR22T plane, owned by James, took off from Nashville airport and, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, crashed in a field around 3 p.m. Thursday.

FOX 17 and WTVF-TV report the Nashville singer-songwriter was one of three people onboard a plane that went down near Iotla Valley Elementary School, North Carolina.

Brett James is best known for co-writing Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus Take the Wheel”, which won him a Grammy for best country song in 2007.

He was 57 years old.

There were no survivors in the crash.
