KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A person found dead inside a Kansas City apartment after it caught fire overnight may have been killed before the fire started.

Kansas City Fire responded to a report of smoke coming from a building at Independence and Kensington Avenues just before 1 a.m. That’s just north of Lykins Square Park.

On arrival, crews reported smoke showing from a two-story brick building.

As crews investigated, it was quickly determined that there was a fire on the second floor in the rear of the building.

Firefighters went into the burning building with two handlines, which quickly put out the flames.

A victim was found dead and quickly removed from the apartment. Searches throughout the rest of the unit and the building came back all clear.
