WOODBINE, Ga. — After several years of rolling back the millage rate, Camden County commissioners are now considering raising the rate.
The current rate sits at 12.1 mills and commissioners are looking to raise it to 14 .1 mills. That's a nearly 18% percent increase. Those in the unincorporated areas of the county would see their rate increase by 1.477 mills.
Camden County Administrator Shawn Boatright said the county needs the money for big projects, like building a brand-new jail and sheriff’s office along with a new animal control facility on the same complex.
"Our current jail is just well past its life expectancy. Safety is a big issue and that's a big concern of ours, not only for the employees that are working there but also the inmates themselves," Boatwright explained.
