A historic city-owned cemetery in Arlington will soon allow the public to purchase available burial plots after declaring over 1,100 gravesites as ‘abandoned.’
The Arlington Cemetery on Mary Street dates back to the 1870s, according to city records.
“There’s a lot of our history here,” said Sarah Stubblefield, strategic initiative manager for the City of Arlington. “Mayors, postmaster, a lot of our founding city leaders… Anyone who knows any streets in Arlington. they’ll see their namesakes buried here.”
The 10-acre plot of land near downtown is the final resting place of early settlers who came to the region in the 1800s, as well as merchants and Confederate soldiers.
The oldest marked gravestone is from 1875, according to the city.
