A retired Albuquerque police detective and combat veteran plans to run against U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez in 2026, setting up what could be another hard-fought battle for New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District and a test of President Donald Trump's popularity among Latino voters.
Republican Greg Cunningham, described as a hard campaigner who is "very conservative," said Friday in a statement it breaks his heart to see his home state continue to struggle with poverty, a broken education system and what he called out-of-control crime.
"We need real solutions — but far left Democrats like Gabe Vasquez keep failing our people," he said. "I look forward to sharing my positive vision for New Mexico's Second Congressional District and, with faith in God, doing my part to serve our communities."
