CLEVELAND — Cleveland native Agnes Gund, one of America's most prominent advocates for the arts, has died at the age of 87.
The Cleveland Museum of Art announced that Gund passed away in her sleep Thursday night while "surrounded by her family." Gund had served on the museum's Board of Trustees since 2009, one of the many hats she wore throughout her life.
"Aggie's impact on the CMA—and on museums and institutions across the nation—cannot be overstated. A tireless advocate for the arts, she was unwavering in her commitment to contemporary artists," CMA Director William M. Griswold said in a statement. "Her fierce dedication to giving artists a platform and a voice will shape our cultural landscape for generations to come."
