PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The Arizona Department of Transportation has given the green light for Tesla to begin testing its autonomous cars in Arizona with safety drivers.
The approval by ADOT comes after Tesla applied with state regulators to operate self-driving vehicles with or without safety drivers.
As part of the self-certification that was submitted by Tesla and approved by ADOT, the vehicles must meet and follow all applicable federal laws, regulations and guidelines, comply with all traffic and motor vehicle laws, and be insured.
A trained Tesla employee, contractor or other person authorized by the company will only be allowed to operate or monitor the vehicle.
Law enforcement does have the right to cite the driver and/or operator if the vehicle fails to comply with traffic law
