Avella’s unblemished record came to a sudden halt after the Eagles (4-1, 1-1) were throttled 42-0 by Tri-County South Conference rival California in a Class 1A showdown at Avella on Friday night.

The Trojans (4-1, 2-0) were led by Malachi Peak, who got California off to a fast start via a 1-yard touchdown run four minutes into the game. Chase Shemansky added a pair of touchdowns on runs of 38 and 14 yards. California also scored on a 67-yard pass thrown by Logan Hartley to Adin Keyes.

Hartley completed 6 of 6 pass attempts for 113 yards. California led 36-0 at halftime. Avella had only given up 24 points through its first four games.
