CHESTERTON — Chesterton has often come up short against Valparaiso on the gridiron.

It’s a trend that’s stretched across the past decade.

“Those games have all been really close,” Trojans coach Mark Peterson said. “We’ve had some unbalanced losses, but for the most part it’s been one score.”

The script flipped on Friday night.

The Trojans beat the Vikings for the first time since Oct. 23, 2015, snapping a 14-game losing streak that included sectional matchups. With a 24-16 victory, Chesterton (3-2, 2-1 Duneland Athletic Conference) not only left Valpo (1-4) behind, but also claimed bragging rights to the traveling trophy known as the “Meridian Cup” — or the “Campbell Cup” or “Milk Jug” depending on who you ask.
