HEARNE, Texas (KBTX) -The Hearne Eagles came out strong in what’s known as the Ultimate Highway 6 showdown, defeating the Marlin Bulldogs 27-6 in their home opener on Friday night.
Why did Hearne win?
The Eagles struck first when quarterback Zayden Mercer connected with Kelton Cooks Jr. near the goal line for the opening touchdown. Hearne added to its lead before halftime when Mercer found Kellen Bowser downfield for another score.
Standout performance
Mercer led the way for Hearne, tossing two touchdown passes and punching in a two-point conversion on a keeper. His play gave the Eagles early momentum and kept the Bulldogs on their heels.
