The Orangeburg Area Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation Inc. will hold its awareness walk under the theme, "Walk a Mile in My Shoes."

The foundation is working to break the silence surrounding the incurable and sometimes painful blood disorder with its 12th annual sickle cell awareness walk.

This year's walk will be held at Centennial Park in the Edisto Memorial Gardens on Saturday, Sept. 20.

On-site registration begins at 7 a.m., with a kickoff ceremony at 8 a.m. The walk will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Last year's walk drew 258 participants.

"My goal is 300 walkers each year. It makes me feel so proud that I can look out and see the number of folks. It means more and more people are being aware of the deadly disease of sickle cell anemia. So I'm just so happy. I
